Refrigerators? Yup, GM made those too.

I saw the 'worst company logos' article on the FP and seeing that big blue GM square reminded me of the refrigerator we used to have. It was tall boxy and brown with that exact same logo on it. It reminded me of the late 70's / early 80's Caprice. I think those blue squares are the logos on the release of the seat belt buckles in my '73 Buick. A neighbor who had it for a few decades gave it to my brother and I when we got our own place. They had moved it from their kitchen to the basement (still using it), then it was in our kitchen for another decade or so. Not sure where we lost it along the way, but as far as I know it was an early 70's model and was in use for at least 30 years with no known maintenance, ever.

I was looking into it and found out that GM owned Frigidaire from the early 1900s until 1979. Had no idea. I always wondered where a GM fridge came from.

Nostalgic memory triggered! I was brainwashed from childhood. No wonder I'm a GM guy!

yep they sure did make them, and noone makes a fridge like anyone used to. I have a 1970's Sub Zero fridge and a 1949 Revco Chill Chest freezer for my refrigeration needs. Both never been charged and are very efficient (because of all the insulation in em)

I wonder if that was during wartime? When GM and other plants were commissioned to make "tanks and other stuff" for the military...

GM still builds the best A/C compressors on the market. This is my boss's 63 split window, it has factory air which will freeze you out even in August Tampa gridlock.

Back then they sure did! But the newer compressors of the mid-late 90's into early '00s seem to have longevity issues.

The malaise era compressors were the pancake radial R4.

Kinja'd!!!

They often exploded due to poor airflow over the condenser (tube & fin design) and a clogged orfice tube. If you install a modern parallel flow condenser up front and an adjustable orfice tube, these systems will provide bone chilling cold for years

Interesting. I'd heard the adjustable orifice tube recommended before. I'd love to know more about how to get the A/C running great in my '73 Buick. The system was apart for years and I have most of the pieces but want to make sure it's going to last. I still need to get a condenser and probably have the hoses custom made.

Your hoses might still be available. Measure out your original condenser and find the closest modern design (parallel flow). I would use a new Sanden 508 compressor of you have the funds, they are super efficient and dont eat as much HP vs stockers

In college I bought a used 1950s era GE "Cosmopolitan" for $100, used. I put a bottle of 80 proof vodka in the freezer; overnight it froze it solid. The thermostat was busted; that got repaired and all was good after that.

holy crap I dont even think the refrigerant they put in modern fridges can make it that cold

I think the freeze point of 40% alcohol is about -16 degF...
